Viking Host Dinamo Zagreb in Historic Champions League Second Leg
Viking FK drew 2-2 away at Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League play-off first leg on 18 August, setting up a winner-takes-all second leg at Lyse Arena on 26 August. With ticket demand through the roof and the club sitting second in the Eliteserien, Stavanger is bracing for its biggest European night in years.
Dinamo Zagreb Draw Sets Up Thrilling Second Leg
Viking FK made history on Tuesday 18 August, travelling to Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off round tie against Dinamo Zagreb. The match ended 2-2, leaving everything to play for ahead of the return fixture.
The second leg is scheduled for Wednesday 26 August at Lyse Arena in Stavanger — a night that promises to be one of the most electric European occasions the stadium has ever hosted. With the tie perfectly poised, Viking will have the backing of their home crowd as they bid to reach the next stage of the Champions League.
Ticket Frenzy and Sold-Out Fears
Demand for the home leg has been extraordinary. Viking FK announced on 17 August that uncollected UEFA-allocated tickets would be released at 20:00 that evening, urging supporters to secure their seats for what the club itself has called a "historic home match at Lyse Arena."
The surge in interest has extended to merchandise as well. The club's special European jersey — launched on 10 August in partnership with new shirt sponsor Kabal — has proven a runaway success, with fewer than 1,000 units remaining as of 16 August. The club confirmed that staff are working around the clock to fulfil orders ahead of the European clash.
Second in Eliteserien, One Point Off the Top
Viking's continental adventure comes against the backdrop of a superb domestic campaign. After 17 Eliteserien matches, Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim and Morten Jensen's side have recorded 13 wins, one draw and three defeats, amassing 40 points and a goal difference of +23. Only Bodø/Glimt, on 41 points, sit above them in the table.
The most recent league setback was a 2-1 defeat away at Rosenborg on 14 August, but that followed a convincing 2-1 home victory over Sarpsborg 08 at Lyse Arena on 8 August. With 13 league games still to play, the title race remains wide open.
A Packed Schedule Ahead at Lyse Arena
After the Champions League decider on 26 August, Lyse Arena will barely have time to draw breath. An Eliteserien home fixture against Aalesund follows just three days later on 29 August at 18:00, before further home league games against Kristiansund on 13 September and Lillestrøm on 20 September.
This is Viking's 76th season in the top flight of Norwegian football and their eighth consecutive year in the Eliteserien — and it is shaping up to be the most memorable of them all.
